A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum…

No, not the 1966 film.

I had to get up early* to send Dave off to a meeting, and well, the computer beckoned. So I cleared the email and meant to start catching up on forum** messages, when twitter caught my eye. There was this cool posting from @DeepFriedDNA:

BoqmPHAIUAEoiC4

So, I altered the tweet and added the hashtag ‘I love gulls’ and moved on.

And then it EXPLODED***!

You see, I follow a lot of biologists and that tweet wouldn’t warrant a blip on their radar, but somehow a physicist found it, and retweeted it, and THEN THEY ALL FOUND ME! The physicists that is…

For hours, my tweet was retweeted and there were a few, quite funny, complaints about the picture not being labeled correctly, so I did my own this time:

biology_physics_ilovegulls

and that one exploded, too! Not as big, but, gee this is fun!

And then (no and then) a lovely message came up from @SamTerfa pointing me to this quote:

You can know the name of a bird in all the languages of the world, but when you’re finished, you’ll know absolutely nothing whatever about the bird… So let’s look at the bird and see what it’s doing — that’s what counts. I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something.

And, in the end, that is what I do.

Yes, Virginia, I am an ornithologist.

🙂

*and by early I mean before dawn, and by before dawn I mean before the birds are up, urg, yuck, yawn 😉 I love my sleep…

**I teach these distance education classes, and there is a closed chatroom where lectures and questions are posted called a forum (hence the name of this post).

***not really
